What to Wear: My Top Outfit Ideas for Your Photography Session

As a photographer, one of the most common questions I get asked is: “What should I wear for my photo session?” And honestly, it’s a great question! The outfits you choose can completely transform the look and feel of your photos. So, whether you're booking a family shoot, couples session, or a solo portrait, I’ve put together my favorite outfit ideas for your photography session—designed to help you feel confident, comfortable, and camera-ready.

1. Go Neutral and Earthy for Timeless Vibes

Neutrals like beige, cream, tan, white, sage, dusty blue, or muted rusts are always a win. These tones photograph beautifully in both indoor and outdoor settings and keep the focus on you, not your clothes. They're especially perfect for nature sessions or beach shoots.

Pro Tip: Avoid neon or high-contrast patterns that might clash with your surroundings or distract from your expressions.

  1. Coordinate, Don’t Match

If you’re planning a group or family shoot, the goal isn’t to wear identical outfits—it’s to coordinate. Think color palettes instead of duplicates. For example, one person in a soft cream sweater, another in olive green, and someone else in light denim with warm beige. It creates cohesion without being overly matchy.

  1. Layers & Textures Add Depth

Adding a cozy cardigan, a denim jacket, or a knit scarf gives you options for variation in your gallery. Textures like linen, denim, or wool photograph beautifully and add depth to your images.

Bonus: Layers are great for Newfoundland’s unpredictable weather—just in case the wind picks up or the fog rolls in!

  1. Dress for the Location

If we’re heading to the coast, long flowy dresses or windswept skirts look incredible. In an urban or studio setting, chic jumpsuits or sleek jeans and boots can bring a modern, editorial vibe. Planning your outfit around the backdrop ensures your look complements the environment.

5. Keep It Comfortable

You’re going to be moving, posing, sitting, and maybe even dancing. So above all—wear something that feels like YOU. Confidence comes through in photos, and that starts with being comfortable in your clothes.

  1. Don’t Forget the Little Things

    • Shoes: Clean and simple footwear is best (or go barefoot on the beach!)

    • Accessories: Subtle jewelry or hats can add a personal touch.

    • Undergarments: Make sure they aren’t visible through your clothing or slipping out of place.

  2. Let Me Help You Style It

Still unsure? Don’t stress—I’m happy to help you pick the perfect outfit! Many of my clients send me options ahead of time, and I love offering feedback based on the session style, light, and location. I also have a client closet with a few flowy dresses you’re welcome to borrow.
